Afternoon Tea at the Royal station Hotel: Review

Welcome to one of the most beautifully built buildings in Newcastle where you are greeted with huge chandeliers and gorgeous wedding flower displays. I was kindly invited to review the Spring/summer Afternoon tea. I decided to book this for a late afternoon at 5 pm, as they serve until 6 pm, which is brilliant for us office workers. We were kindly greeted and given 2 delicious glasses of prosecco garnished with a sweet strawberry.

“The Royal Station Hotel, Newcastle is a grade 1 and 2 Victorian listed building boasting elegant architecture, officially opened by Queen Victoria in 1850. Today, we offer spacious rooms, an indulgent bar and restaurant, an indoor heated swimming pool and a fitness centre within its iconic walls.” Royal station Newcastle

Location

This is a brilliant spot if you are travelling via public transport or taxi, however, if you are coming via a car it can be difficult to get parked. There is local parking available near for 1 hour only or you have multi-story car parks a 5minute walk away. You can access the hotel carpark round the train station but around this time of night is not ideal due to the busy city centre.

The Room

We kindly had a table reserved next to the window which was nice lighting. we both love being able to see outside whilst having a bite to eat. the room itself was lovely, there was quotes on the walls and the inside ligting was not too bright. Perfect to just relax.

The Staff

The staff were very polite from the reception desk to the restaurant. The waiter checked on us several times during our visit to ensure we were ok ( Apologies, I did not catch his name ) and if we needed anything else. This was not overbearing having both worked in hospitality, it was sufficient.

The general manager Michelle came and introduced herself to us before we started the afternoon and she was lovely. Michelle explained they have a new Autumn menu coming in the next month which is exciting. Unfortunately, No spoilers were given away. I praised the look of the current menu with the Do’s and Don’ts. I’ve never seen this before and I hope they keep it, as it was great to keep relating to during the experience.

Top tier
You get 4 mini desserts each. which were Layered Banoffee shot, Lemon meringue tart, White Chocolate Raspberry delice, Mini Victoria sponge

Middle tier a Warm homemade Scone with a scoop of clotted cream and a mini jar of strawberry jam

Lower tier 3x finger sandwiches – Honest roast ham with pommery mustard mayonaoise, smoke salmon with chive and lemon cream cheese and a Mature cheese and tomato chutney.

Suggestions

Add some more savoury to the afternoon tea as we had a crazy sugar rush. There was no milk chocolate on the top tier which was disappointing for a chocolate fan like myself, maybe a brownie or Chocolate cake?. Our favourite was the White Chocolate raspberry delice as it was super soft and easy on the palette.

I believe because of the location, this afternoon tea could have an extra edge on your usual afternoon tea. By adding some Cheese and crackers/ grapes this would also help to mix up the sugar rush.

What can I book for?

I would recommend booking an afternoon tea for a catch up with friends or occasions like birthdays, anniversaries or celebrations. My partner and I love trying different afternoon teas to see what they offer. We feel the 2 most important parts of the afternoon tea experience are:

1. The location – it must be beautiful and a relaxing place to eat.
2. The Food – There has to be a balance of savoury and sweet.

I look forward to seeing what the Autumn afternoon tea menu will be like in a months time.

Thank you for having us!

  1. It looks really lovely and very reasonably priced too – very competitive with others in town I would say.

    1. Definitely competitive price just a slight more variety would be nice. I need some chocolate cake on there haha! Then it’s a winner! ☺️
