Should I take my 1-year-old abroad?

Are you in two minds to take your 1-year-old abroad? Having doubts about the what-ifs? We have just done it and we are so glad we did!

You may worry about the plane, the time difference, and the sleeping pattern. Let me tell you how it went for us on the way there.

The plane

Flying with Tui 10 am flight – We took our pram to the gate with us which worked out great however, there was no priority boarding for parents as previously advised. But, this wasn’t a massive issue for us our daughter was happy enough watching everyone. We were situated on both aisle seats at the back of the plane. At first glance of this, I was worried about not being beside each other. However, this was perfect. Aria got the best of both parents.

Take off

As I am still breastfeeding, Aria wanted a feed just before take-off which led her to naturally fall asleep on me just before take-off so then she slept for the first 1 hour and 40 minutes of the flight. They give you an attachment seatbelt to add to yours for your baby which can go on any guardian. Your baby must be sitting forward or sideways for take-off as advised by the cabin crew. You will also be given a life jacket for your baby to place under your seat.

I did take some sound-cancelling headphones and held one over the exposed ear for take-off and removed it when up in the air. She didn’t even budge.

Changing a baby on a plane

The room is compact, especially if you have a very tall 14month old but we did it a couple of times and it was a success. A board flattens down behind the toilet so just prepare your nappy, wipes and portable changing mat as much as you can before entering the toilet cabin for ease. The tissues are located at a pullable reach for little ones which Aria kindly pulled out so many and sampled the delicacy, haha yuck! Checked herself out in the mirror a couple of times and stretch her legs and we were good to go back to our seats.

Top tips to occupy a baby

*Depending on your seat location*

•Spinners are great for windows

•LED pad off Amazon

•Download some Netflix onto your devices

•A busy board off Amazon

•Your Child’s favourite toy

• Child’s water bottle

•Teether

Snacks galore on your hand luggage help along the way as you know a little one can have a huge appetite but it can be a mini distraction too if needed.

Being situated at the back of the plane we were off first and onto the transport bus. Perfect start to our holiday

I cannot state how proud I was of our daughter for how she was on her first flight. Everyone loved her and commented on how well-behaved she was.
